A six-style serif reinterpreting midcentury Photostat cuts of Times New Roman Bold, drawing on the contested history of William Starling Burgess's purported 1904 precursor to the Times design.
About
Colophon drew Burgess for their fifth anniversary exhibition, FIVE YEARS, intending it as a neutral accompaniment to the broader typeface showcase. The design takes the Bold and Bold Italic Photostat cuts of Times New Roman as its starting point, filtering them through a deliberately idiosyncratic lens rather than pursuing faithful revival. The name references William Starling Burgess, the American industrial designer whose earlier work some historians believe underpins the Times design attributed to Lardent and Morison.
Classification
A reinterpretation of midcentury Photostat cuts of Times New Roman Bold, itself a transitional serif. Burgess inherits the high contrast, bracketed serifs and vertical stress of the Times lineage while introducing idiosyncratic, subjective adjustments.
