Symbols of Utopia
Céline Hurka Type Foundry · Céline Hurka · 2024

A collaborative textile and typographic art project between Céline Hurka and Yamuna Forzani, translating feminist archival research into large-scale 3D-knitted tapestries incorporating letterforms and botanical motifs.
About
Rooted in archival research at institutions including the Amsterdam Museum and Tilburg Textile Museum, the project draws on feminist histories and botanical imagery to produce a series of seven large-scale tapestries. Typographic elements drawn from letters written by Amsterdam women appear within the woven works, blurring the boundary between textile craft and type design. Produced using 3D-knitting, embroidery and hand embellishment at Tilburg Textile Museum, the works have been exhibited at Dutch Design Week, Art Rotterdam and Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
Classification
This is a textile and tapestry art project with typographic elements rather than a conventional typeface. Classified as display due to its decorative, non-standard letterform application within woven and embroidered artworks.
