Seasummer specimen from Céline Hurka Type Foundry

A variable handwriting typeface created collaboratively by Céline Hurka and Stefaniia Bodnia, drawn from the diary script of illustrator Adrian Pourviseh written during Sea-Watch rescue operations in the Mediterranean in 2021.

About

Developed specifically for the 2023 graphic novel 'Das Schimmern der See', the typeface's single variable axis traces an emotional arc from tranquillity to intensity, mirroring the psychological journey documented in Pourviseh's diaries. The character set includes five alternates per letter, ligatures, symbols and Ukrainian Cyrillic developed by Bodnia. Fifteen per cent of profits support Sea-Watch E.V., the humanitarian rescue organisation that forms the book's subject. The typeface received a TDC Award and was presented at ATypI 2025.

Classification

A variable handwriting typeface derived from real handwritten diary entries, with a single axis moving from calm to intense letterforms. Its organic, personal character places it firmly in the handwriting script category.
