Gauche
Céline Hurka Type Foundry · Céline Hurka, Jan Egbers · 2024

A digitally revived grotesque sourced from a Nikkor Annual photobook, characterised by shallow arcs, oversized caps and a wildly steep 28-degree italic with a shifted baseline.
About
Originally spotted in a Nikkor Annual photobook years before the revival began, Gauche retains the source material's deliberate oddness: proportions that read as structurally wrong but are entirely consistent. The family spans five roman weights plus an italic, accompanied by a set of decorative figures and punctuation drawn from the original source. It was awarded a TDC Award in 2024.
Classification
A revival grotesque with deliberately irregular proportions: shallow arcs, wide capitals and an extreme 28-degree italic with a shifted baseline. These idiosyncratic characteristics place it firmly in the grotesque tradition while subverting its conventions.
