Mantinia CC
Carter & Cone · Matthew Carter

A titling face by Matthew Carter drawn from the painted and engraved letterforms of Andrea Mantegna, with inscriptional capitals, raised small capitals and stone-cut ligatures uncommon in type.
About
Mantinia CC takes its cues from Andrea Mantegna's study of Imperial Roman monumental lettering, channelling a distinctly pre-typographic aesthetic into a single-weight titling family. The design includes several ligatures more native to carved stone than moveable type, a set of raised small capitals, and tall capitals of inscriptional origin. The face was later remastered by Kent Lew and Jill Pichotta for Carter & Cone.
Classification
A titling display face derived from the carved and painted Roman lettering of the Italian Renaissance, featuring inscriptional capitals, raised small capitals and stone-cut ligatures rather than conventional typographic forms.
