Torquemada marks Philip Bouwsma's return to type design after seven years away, drawing on his central role in the New Calligraphy movement that flourished in New York during the 1970s and 1980s. The typeface introduces the Torquemada Principle, a systematic approach to balancing weight, contrast, tension and space in broad-pen letterforms. It represents Bouwsma's attempt to bring a new conceptual rigour to digitally drawn calligraphic type.
