The design draws on the work of Armenian lettering artist Fred Africkian, who applied strict geometric principles to create modern Armenian and Cyrillic alphabets in the late 1970s while maintaining a connection to the tradition of Mesrop Mashtots. Africkian's experiments were considered a fusion of art and science, and that tension between historical reference and modernist geometry underpins Taboo Pro. The foundry has adapted these ideas into a Latin-script display typeface.
