Zuidholl specimen from Brutal Types

A single-style Art Deco display typeface adapted from early twentieth-century commercial signage on a former brewery building in Haarlem.

About

The source material is the decorative lettering on the façade of the former Garage der Zuidholl Bierbrouwerij at Spaarnwouderstraat 15, Haarlem, a building constructed for the Zuid-Hollandsche Bierbrouwerij of The Hague from around 1900. Espinoza has translated those handcrafted letterforms into a digital typeface, improving their consistency and extending the character set while retaining the ornamental quality of the originals. With Western Latin coverage and a single style, it is suited to logotypes, posters, packaging and signage that call for a period European Deco flavour.

Classification

A single-style display typeface derived from early twentieth-century decorative commercial signage, firmly in the Art Deco tradition. Its expressive, ornamental character places it squarely in the display category rather than any text or workhorse classification.
