Kanela specimen from Brutal Types

A single-style display typeface drawn from a metal funerary inscription in Barcelona's Poblenou Cemetery, reinterpreted by Ramiro Espinoza with reversed contrast and slightly condensed, sculptural letterforms.

About

The source material is a Canela family tomb inscription in Barcelona's historic Poblenou Cemetery, where metal letters embedded in stone exhibit a quietly unconventional character with Art Nouveau undertones. Espinoza has translated that singular moment of forgotten craftsmanship into a usable typeface, preserving the reversed contrast and sturdy proportions that give it weight in signage, packaging and identity work. It is a single style, available from Brutal Types since 2025, covering Western Latin.

Classification

A single-style display typeface with reversed contrast and slightly condensed forms, placing it firmly in the display category. The reversed stress and sculptural letterforms are characteristic of expressive display type with historical roots in funerary and vernacular lettering.
