Grendex
Brutal Types · Ramiro Espinoza · 2026

A modular display typeface by Ramiro Espinoza, derived from the three-dimensional signage of a former Dutch pharmacy in Gouda and the systematic lettering experiments of Jurriaan Schrofer.
About
Espinoza studied the structure and spatial logic of the original Grendel Apotheek sign and distilled its underlying modular system into a contemporary digital typeface, refining irregularities and expanding the character set without recreating the source literally. The result carries a solid, sculptural geometry suited to posters, branding, packaging and cultural projects that call for a clear constructed visual language. It bridges postwar Dutch graphic design experimentation and present-day typographic practice in a single style.
Classification
A modular display typeface with pronounced three-dimensional geometry derived from architectural signage lettering, placing it firmly in the display category with a constructed, modular subcategory rooted in mid-century experimental lettering.
