Bioskoop
Brutal Types · Ramiro Espinoza · 2025

A single-style Art Deco display typeface by Ramiro Espinoza, reviving the lettering from the façade of a long-abandoned cinema in Maastricht.
About
Bioskoop originates from the distinctive hand-lettered signage of the Cinema Palace at Lage Barakken 12 in Maastricht, a building whose architects remain unidentified. Espinoza translated these interwar forms into a functional digital typeface suited to posters, film titles, logos and editorial work. The expanded proportions and theatrical character of the source material are retained throughout.
Classification
An expanded display typeface drawing directly from early twentieth-century Art Deco cinema lettering, with theatrical proportions and period-appropriate elegance that place it firmly in the decorative display category.
