BTC Cold Cuts
Bad Type Club · Matt Scott Barnes & Kelly Scheurich · 2020

A single-weight heavy display face drawing from Asian typographic traditions, with thick-to-thin brush-like strokes designed in collaboration between Matt Scott Barnes and Kelly Scheurich.
About
Rather than replicating the clichéd brush scripts used to signify Asian culture in Western food packaging, BTC Cold Cuts takes its formal cues directly from Asian typography. The resulting glyphs carry strong calligraphic weight contrast and a gestural quality that sits somewhere between lettering and type. Proof-of-concept specimens centred on hip-hop artists, grounding the face in contemporary popular culture.
Classification
A heavy display typeface with thick-to-thin strokes that mimic brush lettering, drawing from Asian typographic traditions rather than conventional Latin brush scripts. The calligraphic weight contrast and gestural forms place it firmly in the display category.
