displayGeometric sans / blackletter hybrid
Dark Matter specimen from Altiplano

A single OpenType file housing two complementary styles — a geometric sans with calligraphic terminals and a geometrically structured blackletter — conceived as a tribute to the typographic experiments of Jan Tschichold and Johannes Itten.

About

Dark Matter fuses two historically opposed typographic traditions into one file: Style 1 is a geometric sans-serif with bevelled endings and ligatures drawn from calligraphic practice; Style 2 reinterprets blackletter through a rigorous geometric framework. Both styles share consistent weight and construction logic, allowing them to be used separately or in deliberate combination. The concept references the artistic tension of 1920s avant-garde typography, particularly the mixed-face compositions of Itten and the polemical geometry of Tschichold's New Typography manifesto.

Classification

Dark Matter pairs a geometric sans-serif with calligraphic bevelled endings against a blackletter-derived style built on geometric structure, making it a dual-style display face that defies single-category placement; classified as display due to its expressive, compositional intent.
