A three-optical-size serif family designed over six years to address legibility across print and screen at Display, Text and Micro settings.
About
Designed by Tassiana Nuñez Costa between 2014 and 2020, Thelo applies the punchcutter's tradition of optical sizing to digital typography, with distinct drawings for Display, Text and Micro use. The Text cut favours clean, modernist forms with pointed connections and flared terminals, while the Micro cut shifts towards solid rectangular serifs for small-size clarity. The Display cut offers lively, sharp strokes suited to large-scale composition.
Classification
Thelo sits between modernist and glyphic traditions: its Text variant has pointed connections and flared terminations characteristic of glyphic typefaces, while the Micro variant adopts rectangular slab-like serifs. The family's optical-size structure and clean construction align it broadly within the serif category.
