A dual-axis type system pairing a Romain du Roi-inspired serif with a geometric sans, each offered with italic and titling variants, united by a shared philosophy of construction over drawing.
About
Designed by Thomas Bouville and released in 2019, Kelvin comprises two subfamilies built on distinct historical models: Kelvin Avec draws from early 18th-century serifs, specifically the Romain du Roi, while Kelvin Sans references the geometric sans-serifs of Jakob Erbar, Rudolf Koch, Edward Johnston and Paul Renner. The two share a constructive logic rather than a common skeleton, with titling (Solaire) and italic cuts that push each subfamily's defining characteristics further. The result is a coherent system that holds together through conceptual rigour rather than visual uniformity.
Classification
Kelvin is a dual-subfamily system pairing a transitional serif (Avec, referencing the Romain du Roi) with a geometric sans (Sans, referencing Erbar, Koch, Johnston and Renner). The serif subfamily governs the overall classification as the primary axis, though the family spans both categories.
