A 2016 digital revival by Matthieu Cortat of a typeface found in a 1778 edition of Helvétius's De l'homme, drawn in the manner of Fournier Le Jeune with a notably lively italic.
About
The source material is a typeface used in a clandestine French publication falsely claiming a London imprint – a common evasion of censorship at the time. Cortat has preserved the Fournier influence and the playfulness of the original italic while adding a large x-height and two extra weights to extend the family's utility for contemporary jobbing work. Six styles in total cover Roman, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Black and Black Italic.
Classification
Revives a late 18th-century typeface in the manner of Fournier Le Jeune, placing it squarely in the French transitional tradition with moderate stroke contrast and a notably playful italic. The slightly condensed proportions and large x-height reflect practical jobbing concerns while the historical source anchors the design in Enlightenment-era French typography.
